Sensory Play

Blindfolds

Blindfolds are a form of sensory play in which one partner voluntarily wears a covering over their eyes, partially or fully blocking their vision during intimate or sexual activity. Removing sight heightens the remaining senses, including touch, sound, smell, and taste, which can intensify physical sensations and create a stronger focus on each stimulus. Blindfolds also introduce an element of anticipation, since the blindfolded partner cannot predict what will happen next, which many people find arousing. This practice fits within a broader category of power exchange and sensory deprivation play, though it can be enjoyed with or without an explicit power dynamic. Common materials used as blindfolds include sleep masks, folded fabric, scarves, or purpose-made leather or satin blindfolds. The practice ranges from very light and casual, such as simply covering the eyes with a T-shirt, to more deliberate scenes with structured roles. It is widely considered one of the more accessible entry points into sensory play due to its simplicity and low barrier to participation.

Safety & consent

Verbal consent and a clear safeword or signal must be established before play begins, since the blindfolded partner loses a key means of reading the environment. Confirm the material used does not cause discomfort or pressure on the eyes. Check in regularly during the scene, as emotional responses like anxiety or disorientation can arise unexpectedly. Have a non-verbal signal, such as tapping out, in case speech becomes difficult. After the scene, allow time for aftercare, since sensory deprivation can produce a strong emotional response in some people.

How to bring it up

  1. Prompt 1"I've been curious about trying blindfolds during sex to see if blocking out sight makes everything feel more intense. Is that something you'd be open to exploring?"
  2. Prompt 2"Would you ever want to try a scene where one of us wears a blindfold? I think the anticipation aspect sounds really appealing."
  3. Prompt 3"I read that blindfolds are a common starting point for sensory play and I've been thinking about it. Could we talk about whether that interests you at all?"
