Power Exchange

Restraint Cuffs

Restraint cuffs are physical restraints, typically worn around the wrists or ankles, used to limit a person's movement during sexual or intimate activity. They are a common entry point into bondage and power exchange, and come in a wide range of materials including leather, neoprene, velcro, and metal. Cuffs are often attached to each other, to a spreader bar, or to a fixed point such as a bedframe using clips or carabiners. The appeal typically centers on the dynamic of one partner being immobilized and the other having control, though the restrained partner retains full agency through negotiated limits and safewords. Some people enjoy the physical sensation of restriction itself, while others are drawn to the psychological elements of vulnerability, trust, or dominance and submission. Restraint cuffs are widely considered one of the more beginner-accessible forms of bondage because they are adjustable, quick to apply and remove, and less technically demanding than rope bondage.

Safety & consent

Always establish a safeword or non-verbal signal (such as dropping an object) before play begins. Check that cuffs fit snugly but are not tight enough to restrict circulation. Periodically check in with the restrained partner and watch for numbness, tingling, or color changes in the hands or feet. Never leave a restrained person alone. Discuss limits, duration, and attachment points in advance. Consider having safety scissors nearby for soft cuffs. Emotional aftercare following the scene supports both partners in transitioning out of the power exchange dynamic.

How to bring it up

  1. Prompt 1"I've been curious about trying restraint cuffs during sex and wanted to know if that's something you'd feel comfortable exploring together."
  2. Prompt 2"Would you ever want to try a scene where one of us has our wrists cuffed? I'd want to talk through limits and a safeword first."
  3. Prompt 3"I've been thinking about light bondage, specifically cuffs, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on whether that interests you at all."
