Pet Play & Fantasy

Claiming / Marking

Claiming and marking is a kink in which one person symbolically or physically establishes ownership or possession over another, often within a dominant/submissive or pet play dynamic. Symbolic claiming can include verbal declarations, collaring, giving a pet name, or assigning rules that reinforce the relationship structure. Physical marking refers to leaving visible or semi-visible signs on the body, most commonly hickeys, bite marks, or bruising, as a reminder of the dynamic or a signal to others. In pet play contexts, claiming often mirrors how an owner bonds with and takes responsibility for a pet, reinforcing roles through rituals, collars, or tags. The appeal typically centers on feelings of belonging, devotion, trust, and the psychological satisfaction of being chosen or of choosing someone. This kink sits at the intersection of power exchange and intimacy, and can range from entirely symbolic gestures with no physical component to more intense physical expressions depending on the preferences of everyone involved.

Safety & consent

Physical marking leaves real bruises or skin damage, so both partners must explicitly consent to location, intensity, and visibility before play. Discuss how marks may be visible in professional or social settings, as this can have real-world consequences. Establish a safeword and check in afterward since the emotional weight of claiming dynamics can be unexpectedly intense. Symbolic claiming, like collaring or pet names, carries significant relational meaning for many people, so clarify what these gestures mean to each person to avoid mismatched expectations.
