Power Exchange

Slavery

In the context of consensual kink, slavery refers to a power exchange dynamic in which one person (the slave) voluntarily surrenders a high degree of autonomy, authority, and decision-making to another person (the owner or master/mistress). This dynamic sits at the more intensive end of the D/s (dominance and submission) spectrum and typically involves ongoing, structured roles rather than scene-by-scene negotiation. The slave may follow rules, protocols, and directives covering a wide range of behaviors, from daily routines to speech patterns to physical posture. Unlike lighter submission dynamics, slavery often implies a more total power transfer, sometimes called TPE (total power exchange), where the submissive partner has agreed to cede control across many areas of life. This is a consensual, negotiated arrangement between adults and has no relation to non-consensual coercion. Practitioners often distinguish between lifestyle slavery (integrated into daily life) and scene-based slavery (limited to specific sessions). The relationship is defined entirely by prior negotiated agreements.

Safety & consent

Thorough negotiation is critical before entering this dynamic. Both partners should discuss hard limits, safeties, exit conditions, and how consent can be withdrawn at any time using a safeword or agreed signal. Regular check-ins (sometimes called relationship reviews) help prevent power imbalance from becoming psychologically harmful. The submissive partner should retain the genuine ability to leave the dynamic without fear of punishment or retaliation. Watch for signs of emotional dependency, isolation, or coercion creeping into the relationship, as these signal the dynamic has moved outside consensual boundaries.

How to bring it up

  1. Prompt 1"I've been curious about deep power exchange dynamics, specifically something closer to a master and slave structure. Is that something you'd ever want to explore together?"
  2. Prompt 2"Would you be open to reading about TPE and slavery dynamics with me so we could talk about whether any part of it appeals to us?"
  3. Prompt 3"I've noticed I'm drawn to the idea of a very structured, high-protocol submission role. I'd love to hear your honest thoughts on whether that's something you'd find interesting."
